Think about your last doctor’s visit. How much time did your doctor spend with you? Did you discuss health habits or nutrition or your lifestyle and activity levels? Or maybe you just got a straightforward answer, like I did, that they need to mind the taxpayers’ money and you are entitled only to basics.

Most often the experience with today’s doctors is not a pleasant one as they only have few minutes to spend with each patient, they simply don’t have enough time and they are trained to focus on your sickness. Most doctors are also not trained to develop a long-term plan to keep you healthy and motivated and let’s not forget accountable too.

This is where we, health coaches can help! We know today that we can prevent many chronic diseases with the right diet and lifestyle changes and health coaches have time to support clients on their healing path.

The primary role of a health coach is to help clients achieve their health goals. We do this by mentoring, guiding, motivating, etc.

The essential part of health coaching is building a trustful relationship and rapport so the client can feel safe opening up and discussing their issues. Through motivational interviewing and deep discussions, the client is able to become aware of personal problems and limitations. The goal is to focus on the present and explore the individual’s core values and goals. It is most important for clients to express a desire for change rather than being told change is necessary. When this is achieved we can build a vision and specific goals which will lead a client to success.

It is important to keep in mind that health coaches are not licensed dieticians nor medical advisors who treat medical conditions or diseases.

Health coaches work one-on-one with clients to focus on the emotional, physical, behavioral, nutritional, and lifestyle factors that are needed to enhance overall health and well-being!
I practice a holistic approach to health and wellness, which means we will look at how all areas of your life are connected. Does stress at your job or in your relationship(s) cause you to overeat? Or does lack of sleep and low energy prevent you from exercising? As we work together, we will look at how all parts of your life affect your health as a whole.

Together we will understand that life happens, needs can change, but we have the power to be self-aware to make the best decisions for ourselves in any given circumstances. And at the end of the day keep in mind we are all only humans!
